Stripped back bare to the bone, MoVida Sydney hides in the modern nook of Holt Street. MoVida brings to the table an unexpected twist on tapas styled dining without the need to pack your bags. Yes, Sydney brace yourselves as we finally get a little piece of MoVida love!

MovidaSangria & Croqueta 

Eenie meenie mo, and off we go – there’s no hestiation to kick things off with a few glasses of refreshing sangria. Our first flavourstarter entree are the croquettes, and despite the spicy “sound” of horseradish on the menu, it is in fact a crispy bundle of joy, of smoked eel, potato and horseradish.

Next up are two litle bowls of caldo, a savoury custard with almost a umami flavour of burnt onion and truffle consomme. Truffle doesn’t leave me weak at the knees but this one is dished up quite well.

MovidaPanfried Quail & Black Pudding Terrine

Slowly appreciating the world’s love affair of terrines, I slowly picked at the panfried terrine and taken by surprise. Panfrying definitely helps ease my texture issues of terrine and with an accompanying sweet blackcurrant sauce, it didn’t leave the dish feeling too black pudding-esque.

My foodie companion has been on a rave about Pedro Ximenez (I mean, who doesn’t love saying that name?!) so the slow cooked beef cheeks in Pedro were a no brainer. Served with a smooth, yet subtle cauliflower puree, the hearty beef cheek fell apart with the twist of the fork.

MovidaRabbit w/ Spring Vegetables

Along with the extensive menu, there’s quite a few daily specials and since we were going outside of the box, we dived into a colourful dish of rabbit (it’s official dish name escapes me), served with young spring veggies and jus. Keeping the “Bugs Bunny” images out of my mind, I couldn’t help but love the simplicity but flavours in the dish. A fresh welcome to Spring and warmer afternoons (finally!).

Rubbing our bellies, it was time for the dessert chamber to be opened. A almond fondant with a little oozing surprise definitely hit the spot with a scoop of not-too-sweet fig ice cream.

Upon first inspection of the menu, the unusual look of anchovies, black pudding, terrines and horseradish can look a little daunting, but lunch was absolutely delicious. Without having the pleasure of dining at the Melbourne MoVidas, this one definitely hits high on my hot-to-go list in Sydney at the moment.

Along Waterloo St in Surry Hills is a burst of fabulous new finds. Orto Trading Co is a cute retro bar on the corner; perfect for a girls’ night out. With Sydney’s sudden and torrential downpour, we all hustled in and cuddled inside to flickering candles, fresh flowers in our little corner.

There’s bountifuls of beer, wines and cocktails on the drinks menu, but our choice of poison to wind down were jugs of fruity sangria; all served in little jars and retro straws.

Scotch Egg

There’s a mix for dishes for the nibblish or the starving. First up are for the nibblish is the scotch egg is an oldie but a goodie. Made from house made pork sausage encasing a soft boiled egg. It’s dished up with a pear piccalilli; a British pickle with a mix of mustard and turmeric and perfect when the meat is a little least moist.

Cauliflower Fritters

A fabulous alternative to potato chips are cauliflower fritters; fried and lightly coated in herbs and spices with the right amount of crunch. The chef must be a fan of pear as this dish was paired with a curried pear sauce; not necessary but adds just a little punch.

One of the fuller mains is the chunky roast pork hock for two. Still on the bone, it’s served on a gorgeous wooden board overflowing with roast parsnips, caramelised apples and mountain of cabbage slaw. Diggin’ the whole caramelised apple as it goes wonderfully with pork. Things are also always better when they are not doused in sauce, so I loved the milk bottle of pour-at-your-own-pace gravy. And although for two, this little baby filled up four bellies…

Girls Picnic Lunch @ The Winery by Gazebo, Surry Hills

The Winery

It isn’t long before I am back here absorbing the sunshine and quirkiness of The Winery again. This time, I’ve brought along some girlfriends for the Girls Picnic Lunch which is The Winery’s suave terminology for a cheeky afternoon and alcohol high tea-esque lunch. I have the pleasure of sitting in the upstairs dining filled with draped curtains, mismatching couches and cane chairs, but still many deer heads, photo frames and lamps dangling from the walls.

The tables are dressed in black and white polka dots and there’s a nice flute of bubbly upon arrival (they know how to get girls giggly and the party started!). And if that’s not enough, there are bottleless jugs of minted lemonade throughout. My fellow girlfriend also raved on and on about the white wine sangria, so we couldn’t go pass without ordering a jug. It’s a wonderful concoction of chardonnay, cointreau, martini bianco (an Italian type of vermouth; dry fortified wine) mixed with mint, lychees and lemons. Let’s say that we didn’t stop at one jug…

The Winery

The starters come out in a beautiful wicker basket filled with a cheese platter, prosciutto and a tomato & buffalo mozzarella salad – all to have with our fresh stick of baguette. I love a good tomato salad, and it was mixed with torn basil and lightly tossed in balsamic vinegar; the best marriage for tomatoes.

The Winery

Next on the agenda is the grand platter; a moderate twist away from the traditional high tea but nonetheless, very delicious. The top tier filled with seasonal fruits, pink baby macarons, marshmellows, chocolate brownie triangles – all hugging a bowl of chocolate sauce. The next tier with small buns filled with an assortment of fillings from prawn & lemon, mozzarella & tomato and chicken & cider roasted apple. Finally, the bottom tier of feta, pinenut and spinach quiche on a bed of rocket.

The best bites had to be the mozzarella & tomato with a generous smear of pesto (simple yet so delicious!), baby macarons and of course, the chocolate brownie triangles (much like the massive one I devoured here).

The food here isn’t mind blowing out of this world, but it’s a gorgeous location with an amazing decor that can entertain for hours. The service is extra attentive and on a cold Winter’s day, it’s the next best place than bed.
