The Eathouse Diner

The Eathouse Diner

After being all loco’d out over at El Loco, it was time to search for some desserts to sweeten our palates after numerous tacos and margaritas. The Eathouse Diner isn’t too far away so we hustled along to the next suburb and trekked down to find the bright coloured lights and of course the, Eat Here sign.

Inside it’s warm and it feels as though we’ve stepped back in time with retro milkbar benchtops, a chalkboard menu and vinyl floors. The dessert menu isn’t too far off being retro and ol’ school either, bringing back the favourites of Eton’s Mess and the classic forgotten Banana Spilt.

Still warm and giggly from our tequilas, we sit outside under the moonlight and devour our chosen desserts. The Eathouse Mess is mashed in with crunchy meringue, rhubarb, cream and coulis; so it was sweetness and texture galore. The banana spilt was the hot favourite being in its traditional boat bowl finished with a paper umbrella and wafer. Generous amounts of smashed up bananas, banana ice cream, chocolate sauce and crucnhy hazelnuts and macadamias to top it all off. Simple and classic, but brilliant.

Sit at the milk bar for proper food and a glass of wine, or swing by for some childhood desserts!

Baffi & Mo

Ricotta hotcakes with lemon curd, passionfruit & strawberries

Scrambled eggs, chorizo, potato hash & sourdough toast

Waking up from the day after a music festival leaves me feeling nothing more like refueling with good food and resting my poor little soles. Baffi & Mo is a little cafe away from the hustle and bustle of Redfern, with an extensive and delicious brunch menu. Being indecisive, we choose to get a sweet and savoury to share.

The ricotta hotcakes are thick, doughy and filling – drizzled on top is lemon curd, passionfruit, fresh sweet strawberries, a huuuuge dollop of cheese – all dusted with icing sugar to finish. And it all works. The sourness of the lemon curd and passionfruit make it seem not too sweet after all! Our savoury dish is a generous plate of scrambled eggs, sourdough toast, a crunchy potato hash and a spicy chorizo sausage. Simple yet fresh. And do be naughty and give the potato hash ago, particularly if you have a soft spot for the packaged french fries.

Service took a little longer than expected but great food in the end.

Moose General Store

Southern pulled pork roll

Lamb sandwich

Bacon & Eggs

On the corner of the streets of suburbia, this little shop is a jam and granola pumping factory early in the week and a cafe serving homestyle comfort foods in the latter end of the week. I first read about this in Time Out Sydney and I would have ever ended up in that neck of the woods. There’s decor that brings me back to my childhood, like the bright mismatching furniture and china. The owners have put a real good effort into making the little details count – with blankets for those unlucky to sit outside (or would like to admire the nature strip), menu storybooks and little treasures such as the china tea set.

It was disappointing that we didn’t return from our adventure with a jar of Gin & Tonic jam and with service was a little on the slower side – although, who could have blamed them… It is a Friday! It’s all forgiven when the food is finally served and my eager and hungry colleagues demolish their lamb sandwich and pork roll. There was probably a solid 5 minutes of silence with a few nods, hmms and ahs. I dig into the Bangalow sweet-pork bacon and scrambled organic eggs served with sourdough toast – and it’s delicious. Eggs are well cooked, bacon is crispy and the bread is super toasty.

We also got to sample some jams with some amazing bread which lead to a impulse buy of many jars and a bag of granola. I hope they keep pumping the different jams and stop burning the Gin & Tonic – because we’re looking forward to it!

Moose is now unfortunately closed, but still trade through their online store.
