Stripped back bare to the bone, MoVida Sydney hides in the modern nook of Holt Street. MoVida brings to the table an unexpected twist on tapas styled dining without the need to pack your bags. Yes, Sydney brace yourselves as we finally get a little piece of MoVida love!

MovidaSangria & Croqueta 

Eenie meenie mo, and off we go – there’s no hestiation to kick things off with a few glasses of refreshing sangria. Our first flavourstarter entree are the croquettes, and despite the spicy “sound” of horseradish on the menu, it is in fact a crispy bundle of joy, of smoked eel, potato and horseradish.

Next up are two litle bowls of caldo, a savoury custard with almost a umami flavour of burnt onion and truffle consomme. Truffle doesn’t leave me weak at the knees but this one is dished up quite well.

MovidaPanfried Quail & Black Pudding Terrine

Slowly appreciating the world’s love affair of terrines, I slowly picked at the panfried terrine and taken by surprise. Panfrying definitely helps ease my texture issues of terrine and with an accompanying sweet blackcurrant sauce, it didn’t leave the dish feeling too black pudding-esque.

My foodie companion has been on a rave about Pedro Ximenez (I mean, who doesn’t love saying that name?!) so the slow cooked beef cheeks in Pedro were a no brainer. Served with a smooth, yet subtle cauliflower puree, the hearty beef cheek fell apart with the twist of the fork.

Along with the extensive menu, there’s quite a few daily specials and since we were going outside of the box, we dived into a colourful dish of rabbit (it’s official dish name escapes me), served with young spring veggies and jus. Keeping the “Bugs Bunny” images out of my mind, I couldn’t help but love the simplicity but flavours in the dish. A fresh welcome to Spring and warmer afternoons (finally!).

Rubbing our bellies, it was time for the dessert chamber to be opened. A almond fondant with a little oozing surprise definitely hit the spot with a scoop of not-too-sweet fig ice cream.

Upon first inspection of the menu, the unusual look of anchovies, black pudding, terrines and horseradish can look a little daunting, but lunch was absolutely delicious. Without having the pleasure of dining at the Melbourne MoVidas, this one definitely hits high on my hot-to-go list in Sydney at the moment.

Mission Bar & Restaurant

Swing around the other corner of Chippendale, and there’s another gallery displaying contemporary Australia art. But nestled in the street floor of this old church is Mission Bar & Restaurant. Push through the refurnished french doors is a modern eatery with shiny polished floors, slick wooden furniture, bright orange feature walls and intriguing pieces of hanging art.

The menu is dynamic. From the blackboard specials showcasing chef specials for the day, there’s a range of dishes to cater for everyone’s tastes and nibbles. For lunch, there are fulfilling toasted sandwich options, while the menu dives into Mediterranean flavours that packs a punch. Not your everyday lunch spot but perfect for something a little special.

Minute steak with caramelised onion, cheddar cheese & capsicum jam

To avoid falling into food coma, I opted for the safe option of the minute steak sandwiched between fresh seeded turkish bread. The steak was slightly overcooked, even for my raw phobia, but the juicy caramelised onions and house made capsicum jam made up for it. I did linger over my colleague’s lamb shoulder with envy, because it was absolutely delicious! Melt in your mouth meat with an abundance of flavours and textures. Delicious!

On a second occasion, I am back and it’s nice to see the feature walls with new pieces of intriguing art. We grab a seat on the casual couches as we’re both opting for some sandwiches that are only available for lunch.

My lunch companion opts for the corned beef sandwich which sadly I didn’t get to pick at, it did get gobbled down quite quickly. Feeling clucky, I choose the piri-piri roasted chicken but unfortunately it felt like the chef accidently dropped the salt shaker into the mix. Hopefully this was a once off and my chicken isn’t salty next time…

Another great gallery cafe in a little alleyway for a little bit of artsyness and delicious food.

Vegetarian piadina

As I got lost amongst the twists and turns of Melbourne’s alleyways, my growling tummy stopped me from venturing further and just opt to settle down at this little Italian pizzeria cafe. I take a seat on a faux balcony overlooking the alleyway, served by kind service and a thick Italian accent. I order a piadina, a Italian styled pressed sandwich made with thin flat bread filled with rocket, cheese, mushrooms and plenty of colourful bell peppers. Warm and stretchy cheese. Delicious and light.

On the corner of the streets of suburbia, this little shop is a jam and granola pumping factory early in the week and a cafe serving homestyle comfort foods in the latter end of the week. I first read about this in Time Out Sydney and I would have ever ended up in that neck of the woods. There’s decor that brings me back to my childhood, like the bright mismatching furniture and china. The owners have put a real good effort into making the little details count – with blankets for those unlucky to sit outside (or would like to admire the nature strip), menu storybooks and little treasures such as the china tea set.

It was disappointing that we didn’t return from our adventure with a jar of Gin & Tonic jam and with service was a little on the slower side – although, who could have blamed them… It is a Friday! It’s all forgiven when the food is finally served and my eager and hungry colleagues demolish their lamb sandwich and pork roll. There was probably a solid 5 minutes of silence with a few nods, hmms and ahs. I dig into the Bangalow sweet-pork bacon and scrambled organic eggs served with sourdough toast – and it’s delicious. Eggs are well cooked, bacon is crispy and the bread is super toasty.

We also got to sample some jams with some amazing bread which lead to a impulse buy of many jars and a bag of granola. I hope they keep pumping the different jams and stop burning the Gin & Tonic – because we’re looking forward to it!

Hutong Dumpling Bar, Melbourne

Having missed this place time after time, we were finally made an reservation for a late lunch. Our reservation for a banquet table on the second floor, which is beautifully decorated with a mix of Beijing and Shanghai accents. Gorgeous wooden furniture with deep red curtains providing privacy for each table. On the dumpling side of things, having tasted the Sydney leader in “soup” dumplings, Din Tai Fung, these ones are on par. The dumplings are a little thinner in texture and the broth is less sweeter, but still a very good shao long bao!
