You gotta love a good bar like this. It’s nothing extraordinary but it just does what a good bar should do, ticking the right boxes with delicious bar food, scrumptious pizzas, alcohol and thankfully, plenty of seats. It’s buzzing on a Friday night with people kicking off their weekend escapades with spots at the bar, down the communal marble table, seats by the window or the cosy little two-seaters along the wall.

The menu is made to share, but the tapas sized dishes mean you can selfishly eat the whole dish without sharing (hint hint, like the peking duck pizza…..)

Seared Scallops

Feeling the generous and sharing mood, we’re kick off with some you-can’t-say-no salt and calamari with a side of sauces; delicious and piping hot bite sized pieces. Nothing amazing but it’s hot and fresh, and not elastically, so that’s comforting.

For something a little spesh, it’s the seared scallops. It’s not long when they arrive on a bed of cauliflower puree, crispy pancetta pieces, lime, tomato and a drizzle of brown nut butter sauce danced around on my tastebuds. Delish.

Continuing the two person chow down, next up are the messy and saucilious pork ribs. They pull off the bone with no trouble and are coated in Li’l Darlin’s signature chilli BBQ sauce. With our saucy grins and BBQ smelling fingers, we dive into the side of kipfler potato chips with aioli. Mmmm!

And when you read crispy peking duck pizza on a menu, you really can’t go past without ordering (plus having a food blogging colleague always helps, hello!). The pizza is crispy thin with lashings of peking duck, hoi sin sauce, shallots, cucumbers, coriander and the magical hints of star anise and cinnamon glaze that ties it altogether. Definitely giving Mad Pizza e Bar up the road a run for its money!

The dessert menu is still sadly very short and it calls for the home made dough sticks. If you’re a lover of fresh bread then this is a treat. Warm, doughy goodness dipped in Belgian milk chocolate is not bad, not bad at all.

La Bodeguita de Medio

Pushing through what seems to be strong glass doors guarding a Gotham city bank, it hides La Bodeguita de Medio, a Latin American surprise; filled with lively music, a well stocked rum bar and plenty of tasty and flavoursome morsels. The interior is theme fitting, with washed out sky blue walls, plenty of picture frames on the walls, wooden features and private booths to hide away in.

Ho ho ho, and a bottle of rum…! If rum is your choice of liquid courage, then this is the perfect bar to be at; with pages and pages of dedicated rum based cocktails and plenty of shots to share. We’re being well behaved as it’s still a school night, so cocktails it is.

I am cameraless tonight but the tapas to share are worth a nibble on, and the amazing ceviche with a tang and bite and braised lamb neck served with Cuban rice and black bean vinaigrette are worth a mention. I’m totally skeptical to raw food (my dad always overcooks meat) so ceviche has never been on my hot list, but this was damn delicious!

Passionfruit Pannacotta

After a night of cocktails, we couldn’t resist some sweet delights while watching live salsa dancing around the tables and booths. The pannacotta is not the usual pyramid wobble, but little coins of pannacotta and passionfruit jelly, all on top of a bed of tapioca soup dressed with fruits and flowers. Usually a lover of tapioca, but I’m not sure it really worked for this dish…

The mocha dome on the hand was a chocolate delight – a decadent chocolate dome, candied peanuts, and salted caramel ice cream. Hello sugar overload but this one was a treat.

Perfect for some exotic foods, a mojito and a little dancing to wave the night away.

The Winery

The Winery has been around for quite some time now, and since my last visit it has been busy expanding its cheeky elegant glamour all over Sydney. All aside, it’s a gorgeous sunny day, and time to wind down with our annual company lunch banquet, so it’s back to Crown St!

The interior is an amusing mix, much like walking into the vintage store of a hoarder; overmelted candles, animal prints, uncoordinated draped curtains, stuffed animals on the wall and mismatching photo frames and furniture.

Veal & chorizo sausage roll with tomato & chilli jam

Rocket, parmesan, grapefruit & pinenut salad

Stuffed roasted mushrooms with ricotta, pineuts & pesto

To kick start our lunch feast, there’s fresh breads to share along with an amazing gourmet sausage roll, simple rocket salad and stuffed mushrooms. The chorizo sausage roll seems like simpleton food, but the real key is solid meat with crunchy leave-flakes-all-over-your-chin pastry. Delish! Alongside are juicy mushrooms generously stuffed with cheesy ricotta with a drizzle of pesto.

Sauteed pumpkin & ricotta ravioli, sage, pine nuts, burnt butter & confit cherry tomatoes

Slow roasted sirloin, creamy mash, caramelised eschallots & a Pinot jus

Grilled Tasman salmon on crushed peas & broad beans with a saffron, lime & tomato buerre blanc

For my main, I devoured a delicious tender grilled salmon sitting on a generous bed of crushed peas and broad beans. The fish is cooked perfectly with just the right touch of seasoning. And to think that The Winery is all girly, it serves up a mean steak. I steal a bite of the man sized steak off my colleague… Juicy and meaty with enough delicious jus to round it all off.

Double chocolate brownie, fairy floss & vanilla bean ice cream

No feast is complete without a sweet and sugary dessert. The decadent warm double chocolate brownie topped with cold vanilla ice cream and sweet, sweet fairy floss seriously brings everyone at the table to a chocolate comatose state. Delicious yet deadly.

Mad Cow

Mad Cow

Birthday time again and looking for something different yet low key and not too fancy, we (the boy & I share the same birthday!) decided on Mad Cow from the Merivale family in the Ivy complex. Mad Cow hides behind the main bar area of the Ivy, and walking into the space, it looks like a New York diner, furnished with little counters, plush white leather seats and splashes of sunshine yellow. Gorgeous.

For starters, we share a few rock oysters that are freshly shucked with red wine vinegar pearls, salmon roe and black pepper embedded in a toffee. Interesting additions to the humble oyster making it slightly sweet in flavour.

For mains, he chooses the Wagyu steak, cooked medium rare served with homemade chimichurri sauce and a side of green salad and shoestring fries. The chimichurri sauce packs a kick and a punch to the steak and is commonly served with steaks in Argentina – made with tomatoes, peppers and many herbs. Nice and tender, but I did prefer my brick slab of crispy pork belly sitting on a bed of king brown mushrooms, apple and jioama, topped with a white scallop. Tiresome to eat after halfway, but I love a good pork belly.

Chocolate decadence

For dessert, we share the chocolate decadence, which the staff nicely surprised us with a lit candle on top. Decadent as described, it included a chocolate mousse made from Valrhona chocolate (a french chocolate) that included a raspberry delice and topped with chocolate pearls, with a side of chocolate sorbet and florentine biscuit. Not so much a fan of non-fruity sorbet but the chocolate mousse and pearls were divine.

Swiss Bakerz

I love cake. I love work even more because everyone loves a good cake time. This time, we ventured to Swiss Bakerz for a baked chocolate mousse cake. Delightful if you have a thin slice but you will definitely go into chocolate coma with a abit too much. And it’s rich, very rich. Perfect for the chocolate lovers like our birthday girl.
