Adriano Zumbo’s Raspberry V8 Cake

by minibites

Zumbo V8

Yes, it’s a little flamboyant and pink, but with an office full of cake enthusiasts and it’s the big man’s birthday, we couldn’t help but dive into a bit of an indulgence…

Keeping up to the challenge is hard, when the year before the beehive croquembouche was conquered by Dexter-esque stabbing and the year before that was the classic white V8 cake made famous by Masterchef.

In its initial appearance, the cake could be any pink and pretty looking cake, but after slicing, the sections reveal beautifully equal layers. Flavour layers of black sesame, raspberry, liquorice, lychee and plenty of rosewater – and works wonderfully textually with layers of gel, crunch, jelly and cream.

While the sugarcoma set, there was a nod in agreeance that this was definitely better than the classic.

Adriano Zumbo’s Croquembouche

by minibites

Adriano Zumbo's Croquembouche

Is it a beehive? A birds nest? Mmm it’s Mr Zumbo’s croquembouche! Another aesthetically pleasing piece of eye candy from Mr Zumbo. It’s the birthday of the most important person in the office, the brain and genius behind it all, so it was a fitting excuse to spoil him… and us!

The tower of custard filled profiteroles is generously held together with toffee then wrapped with spun sugar goodness and tiny flowers. Again, it’s delightfully over to top and overindulgent.

The centre is a lot harder and less delicate as it looks, and really should come with an instruction manual and a miniature hammer and chisel to crack through the toffee. But once you able to serve it, the light choux pastries hide the silky, smooth custard and the spun sugar is just right (it’s a lot harder to do than it looks!!)

This tower had 35 profiteroles which was more than enough to send 13 people into a sugar coma. Make sure you have a tub of vanilla ice cream ready to tames the sweetness.

Adriano Zumbo’s V8 Cake

by minibites

So there’s been an enormous Masterchef addiction in our office this year, especially for my boss – so we only found it fitting to spoil ourselves with the Adriano Zumbo’s V8 cake.

The V8 holds 8 vanilla wonders: Vanilla Crème Chantilly, Toasted Vanilla Brûlee, Vanilla Water Gel, Vanilla Ganache, Vanilla Macaron, Vanilla Dacquoise, Vanilla Chiffon Cake and Vanilla Almond Crunch, and throw in some brown sugar crunch crumble in there just to mix it up a little…

Definitely overindulgent, over the top and deadly sweet. There was no wonder why we all fell into a sugar coma after our little cube. Although there is only one dominant flavour, the different textures made the cake so overwhelming interesting. Without knowing what will come next, eat bite tastes different as everyone tried to pinpoint what was what.

Swiss Bakerz

by minibites

I love cake. I love work even more because everyone loves a good cake time. This time, we ventured to Swiss Bakerz for a baked chocolate mousse cake. Delightful if you have a thin slice but you will definitely go into chocolate coma with a abit too much. And it’s rich, very rich. Perfect for the chocolate lovers like our birthday girl.

Grumpy Baker

This is the cake put me on the tiramisu bandwagon. Sugary and intense espresso soaked sponge fingers with layers of mascarpone and topped with a very generous layer of cocoa powder. This one isn’t for the faint hearted; it’s for serious tiramisu lovers.
