Kazbah on Top Ryde

by minibites

This isn’t your typical brunch hot spot with the eggs, poached, scrambled or fried – eggs are mixed with sprinkles of herbs and spices, delicious and rich meats, greens, reds, and cheese, cheese, cheese! Kazbah makes you fall in love with the vibrant colours, protein filled dishes, sauces and abundance of flavours and textures. There’s the original at Balmain, but it was tempting to give this one a go with no queues and a more laid back atmosphere.

Chickpea Fritters, Pork Belly Shish Kebab, Baby Spinach, Roast Tomato

A pork belly skewer for brunch is definitely an overindulgence; but it was crispy with that thick layer of crackling sitting on top. The poached egg ooozed over the stack of cheese, baby spinach sitting on top of a crispy chickpea fritter.

Roast Pumpkin, Spinach, Roast Capsicum, Roast Tomato, Caramelised Onion, Feta, Eggs, Turkish Toast, Lebanese Bread

My other foodie choose a vegetarian tagine, a dish orientating from Morocco. All of the ingredients such as pumpkin, spinach, capsicum, tomatoes, onions, eggs and feta cheese are thrown into a glazed pot, the tagine, and slowly cooked. The eggs were a little overdone, but still a delicious veggie delight.

Chakchouka Scrambled Eggs, Smoked Salmon, Turkish Toast

Of the three, I would favourite mine the most; a chakchouka of eggs involves a vibrant mix of peppers, tomatoes, onions, eggs of course, and plentiful of herbs and spices of paprika and chilli. Served on toasted turkish bread with slices of fresh smoked salmon, and topped with roe and dill. The eggs were light and fluffy and packed so much flavour to shake any hangover.

Amazing brunches with a twist.

The Great Bagel & Coffee Co

Sweet chili chicken bagel

I never understood why bagels never took off in Australia considering how americanised our society has become with the inflow of reality and drama TV shows, clothing, movies, and masses of fast food chains. I love a good bagel. Fresh and warm. I first spotted this little cafe at Bondi Junction but now with its expansion at a closer location, it’s a relief that someone has finally realised the potential to satisfy the niche market of bagel lovers! The bagels are crunchy on the outside and doughy on the inside with a set menu of bagel burgers or a generous selection of fresh fillings of your choice. And the curly fries aren’t bad either.

The Chocolate Room

Belgium waffles served with vanilla ice cream drizzled with warm chocolate

Crepes served with chocolate, strawberries and vanilla ice cream

Tiramisu hot chocolate served with 3 chocolates of choice

Another trip to my new favourite chocolate cafe in Sydney – the location, the flavoured chocolate drinks, the non-existent lines and super friendly staff. Although it is such as shame that the food does not match the quality of its chocolates and unique chocolate flavoured drinks – I was so disappointed that there was nothing special with the crepes or the belgium waffles that keeps me craving for more.

Hot chocolate was delicious and super flavoursome as per usual. Stick with the drinks.

Iron Chef Yum Cha

by minibites

This is my favourite yum cha hot spot for a lazy Sunday brunch session – which serves good quality dumplings and is affordable, particularly for a large group of friends. The only downfall is the long exhausting wait.

On this particular Sunday; we squeezed through the doors at 3pm and the food service was fast fast fast. The waiter comes over and we immediately order plates and plates of dumplings – which is immediately steamed and served. Although we missed the full yum cha experience, we knew we were eating freshly steamed dumplings straight from the kitchen.

The Chocolate Room

Chocolate Sundae

Hazelnut Hot Chocolate w/ 3 chocolates

This chocolate cafe was stumbled across by pure accident, and it was heaven sent considering the gloomy downpour and the fact that we were all looking for a little something sweet and comforting to keep us warm. The atmosphere of the cafe isn’t as lavish as I hoped it to be, but the hot chocolates definitely made up for it. There are over 20 flavours of hot chocolates to choose from, all served in a cuddle cup or in a large cup kept warm by a lit tea candle underneath. I choose the Tiramisu hot chocolate which smelt divine and tasted heavenly with subtle traces of coffee, mascarpone and chocolate.

It has become my winner in the cafe chocolate category in Sydney (nothing beats Koko Black yet!) and definitely will be heading back to sample more flavoured hot chocolates.
