Pony Lounge & Dining

Grilled italian flat bread served with smoky eggplant & white bean dip

Home of Damian Heads’ current pride and joy, Pony Lounge and Dining. The modern restaurant is situated between the alleyways of The Rocks, but the rustic features of stone and wood are wonderfully incorporated through into the restaurant’s interior. It’s also home to one of the hip happening trends of the restaurant interior design world; the communal table.

For starters, my companion and I share a perfectly grilled flat bread with a smoky eggplant and white bean dip with a bit of a subtle spicy hit. A dish so simple but so delicious – it’s either their olive oil used or their grilling technique. Amongst the quick chow down of our entree, we flip through the drinks menu to encounter my dilemma; wine or cocktail?

Jimmy Thai martini & James Squire Golden Ale

A recent convert to gin, I decided to give the Jimmy Thai cocktail a try. A wonderful mixture of lychee, cucumber and Henricks Gin served in a super chilled martini glass. Having a chilled martini glass definitely made the cocktail wonderful to drink. Cucumber and gin are a definite match made in heaven.

Parmesan and sage crusted veal cutlet served with broad beans and saffron gnocchi

Sirloin served with thick cut chips, watercress salad topped with béarnaise sauce

For our mains, I dive into the crusted veal served with broad beans and saffron gnocchi. It’s perfectly grilled keeping the cutlet tender and juicy. The crust has the right balance of crunch that doesn’t leave me without a tooth but balances the tenderness of the cutlet perfectly. The dish’s companions of broad beans and gnocchi complemented the star attraction, the veal well – not too overpowering but fresh and flavoursome.

A bite of the sirloin was enough for my expanding waistline – I was struggling to power though my own dish! Although, I do love the concept of thick cut chips; these were perfectly seasoned, cooked and cut.

An entertaining night out and a nice opportunity to dine and wine with strangers at the communal table. Perfect for a summer night out, otherwise, they have overhead heaters to keep you feeling toasty.
